Lead The Way
Often when I am the motivational speaker at a conference I will ask for all the leaders within the organisation to raise their hand.
Most of the time I do this around 5 percent of the room raise their hands.
I then pause.
And then I ask them how many hands do they think I wanted to see go up. They get my point.
And my point is this - Leadership is not a title.
Leadership is a mindset, it is a way of being.
I think a big part of leadership is standing up for what you believe in.
How many people do you know who do that?
Not enough in my eyes.
Leadership is not the same as management. It is completely different.
Leadership takes courage.
Courage to stand up for what you believe in and share it with others.
I am not talking about the macho, fist pumping type. Every individual has their own personality style and will express their ideas in different ways.
But not all individuals have the courage to actually express what they believe in.
It takes courage and I think most environments lack it. Whether we are talking about business, sport or education.
Most people are trying to avoid standing out.
To avoid criticism or being in the firing line.
And I'm not berating people for that, it is a part of human nature to want to avoid making mistakes and being criticised. None of us want that.
But in order to achieve great things, the things you may really want to achieve, it will take just that.
And that means simply acting in spite of fear.
Doing it anyway because it is what you believe in. What you STAND for.
So start standing up for what you believe in more often. You might shock more people, who knows maybe even upset more BUT you will also inspire a heck of a lot more people too and the world needs more of that.
